Grandpaboy is Paul Westerberg (of Replacements fame) playing the part of a dead country-blues guy, kind of like the opposite of what Garth Brooks tried with the Chris Gaines thing, except this is good. The opening track, "MPLS" sounds like an early Elvis song with Neil Young playing crazy, out-of-tune-but-good solos throughout. My personal favorite, "Vampires & Failures" sounds like the Stones would if they hadn't gotten old and rich. Other stand-outs include "O.D. Blues", "Take Out Some Insurance", the title track and a cover of Hank Williams' (Senior, that is) "I'm So Lonesome". Skinny white guys suddenly discovering the blues and performing it while wearing bad haircuts and leather jackets usually bug me, but Westerberg pulls it off quite nicely.
