Can you imagine walking into a store and seeing your teacher on the cover of an album? If you are a student at Cameron Middle School in Nashville, that experience just might have happened to you. Grover Levy, whose self-titled album has just been released, is a Physical Education teacher at Cameron. I suppose that teaching and performing are pretty closely related. Both require that you grab the attention of your audience, and in both cases you hope that when you are done, they have walked away with a bit more than what they came with. I have never seen Grover teach, but after listening to this release, my attention was grabbed and I was left with a hopeful feeling for the future.

Levy's first album is what I would consider pop/rock. A good mix of electric guitar, bass, some keyboards and drums. A simple combination that creates a nice sound for Grover's slightly gritty voice. Lyrically, the songs are all pretty sound. They flow nicely, have catchy hooks and speak to the heart. The song "Sanctuary" is a particularly nice song about finding a place to be with God. "Giants In The Land" may not be the most creative lyrically, but it more than makes up for it with bluesy toe-tapping music.

Levy has a lot of potential that I don't believe was completely used in this first effort. I will look for future albums to take advantage of his voice to incorporate a more bluesy and unique sound.

Look for Grover on tour this fall with Brent Bourgeois and Margaret Becker.
