In an effort to avoid extinction, punk rock continues to evolve and improve in order to accommodate an ever changing culture wherein the average musician can only hope to enjoy up to twenty three minutes of fame. Intricate melodies, oft-metal sounding riffage and better all around song crafting now replace the trite sing along choruses and two chord progressions of the punk rock of years past, giving even the jaded listener something to get excited about. Bands representing this trend include, Slick Shoes, Hangnail and now Substant's Logos. While not straying too far from the normal punk rock sound, it is obvious that the guys in Logos have more to their CD collection than just the likes of NoFx and Bad Religion. Along with the usual punk influences, I'm hearing some Mineral, The Get Up Kids and maybe even some Metallica. You never know, I may be completely off here. They could just be an extremely talented group of guys that happen to write music with elements reminiscent of these bands, but I seriously doubt it. This is still definitely punk rock that would be a hit with any MxPx or Blink 182 fan, but there are more creative avenues pursue in the midst of the fast pop punk melodies. The heavy riffage of Metallica and the emotional breakdowns of bands like Mineral and The Get Up Kids combine to give Logos their own comfortable niche in an often crowded scene. Because of groups like Logos, the drive for quality and originality in the punk rock scene is becoming ever stronger. With bands such as this one offering a better product, Perhaps run of the mill MxPx clones won't cut it like they used to. Thank you, Logos.
