What do RUN-DMC, Pink Floyd, Elton John and Dr. Dre have in common? All morph together to form a powerful force of influence over Lojique (pronounced "logic"), a Christian rap group that recently released its second album, Process of Illumination.
Through clever wordplay and strong beats, Lojique unveils its talents and seeks to provide truth to the hip-hop generation in need of positive music. Instead of spitting rhymes rooted in materialism, lust, or other filth of the world, Lojique offers a positive message founded in the gospel.
Page One (A.K.A. Michael Phillips, the lead voice and emcee of Lojique) is not amateur when it comes to music and has been writing and busting his own rhymes since Jr. High School. Even more so than the cutting-edge lyrical content, the off-the-wall hooks are a main contributor to the uniqueness of this album. Lojique's DJs, Nickels (Jackson Johnson) and Because (Nathaniel Hansen) spin the turntables with more experience than the tattoo artist of Dennis Rodman. With years of experience under their belts, Nickels and Because generate innovative licks, taking eminent sounds and meshing them together to create completely unique, and often humorous, rap music (ex: "However You Want It"; "Glare").
The talent, strong rhythms, and sense of mission are all there. However, at times the music appears bland, despite the clever song introductions and DJ performances. Therefore, my only suggestion for this album would be to crank up the energy level and keep on truckin'.
Process of Illumination is a successful attempt to defy the secular rap of our generation and produce diverse music that carries a positive light. When it comes to battling the world for influence over our generation's minds, you must fight fire with fire, and Lojique certainly burns up the turntables.
