Robert Deeble has nearly everything you could ask for in a modern American singer/songwriter. With Bob Dylan/Michael Knott hybrid vocals and lyrics about old pool halls, the "California sun", and Emily Dickinson, Deeble's road-trip-friendly folk brings to mind life's simple pleasures as well as its occasional heartaches. Skillfully produced by Havalina front-man Matt Wignall, Thirteen Stories is built mainly around acoustic guitar, organ, and light percussion. The arrangements are by no means groundbreaking, but they will grow on you after a while. The songs themselves are far from perfect, but the album as a whole is refreshingly peaceful and uplifting. It's one of those CD's that you probably won't listen to very often, but every time you do you'll find that you enjoy it more and more.
