This band really stepped up to the plate with their fourth album. (Question: Do you know anybody who heard or actually has a copy of their third album? Me neither.) Rod Laver needed this album to be good. Fortunately, they nailed it. The opening riffs of "Janet" fly right out of the speakers with aggression. Yes, Rudy brings some rhythm and hip-hop sensibilities with his vox, but we need to thank the rhythm section of Ryan, Chris, and Jason for slapping us in the face with their biting attitude. The combination spells c-r-e-d-i-b-i-l-i-t-y. Just when the guitars get predictable, the vocals bring things up; or, when the vocals start to get tired, the guitars come in and save the song. Everything sounds sweet at once with the stellar "Empty Eyes." The final two tracks serve as bonus filler, but I have to admit I almost fell out of my chair the first time I heard their cover of Faith No More's "Epic." This is fun, but doesn't top the original (I do wanna see Rudy flop around like a fish on stage now, though). Rod Laver, I'm listening again.

Art for the Ears 2002Reviewed by Marco PovervestRod Laver is a quartet that released various albums. In A Perfect World is their first album released through BEC Recordings. Their music is rapcore. The construction of their songs is simple: mellow music in the verses, heavy guitars in the choruses. When you listen to the opening track Janet you can discover a clear POD influence which is not remarkable these days. A Nirvana influence is clear…The Phantom Tollbooth 2001Reviewed by Aaron BellTrends come and go in music. That goes without saying. Trends are what make pop culture "pop." So with the rap-metal trend in full swing it's easy for some bands to get lost in the shuffle and never be heard. But then along comes a band that has something to say and the musical chops to back it up. .Rod Laver need to be heard, and In a Perfect World is the album to hear from this three year old…Dead Zine 2001Reviewed by D_ListerRedemption. That certainly could have been the name of this new album by .rod laver. Let's take a trip back in time for a moment. First came Essence of the Game, a CD that was certainly ok for a first shot but not all that great. Then along comes Trying Not to Try, an album that made a .rl fan out of me by making up for their original release. Next comes the third album in the band's three album…
