Wonderful and consistently compelling vocals by Lance Lammers, a little Slint guitar action in the bridges, and driving rock songs written to build the listener into a frenzy. Seven Storey Mountain make sardonics something to be beaten into the offensive element, and they smart off like that kid in your history class. Signs of frustration and disgust are often released under the cover of Goodwill cardigan machismo, and sensitivity is worn as a filthy badge. "Where Were You" starts out as a generic alt-rock ballad, but builds ingeniously and carefully into a wall. "Unrest" is boring. "So Soon" and "Reality Time" flat out rock. "Politician" begins with cute sarcasm and wordplay and climaxes into caustic, righteously indignant sarcasm and wordplay. Great, great rock album, written by intelligent, concerned, passionate indie-rockers, performed with dignity and expertise.
