Virginia's Spitfire brings us some new rancor on Goodfellow Records. More consistent and focused than their Solid State release, the four songs on this disc show a lot of growth in their chosen approach to the metalcore muse. Their newfound sense of dynamics conjures up the good songs on Society's Finest's last record, and live-performed Luti-Kriss numbers. Risks like the synthetic Thrill Jockey smooth-groove that is the title track pay off, especially when they destroy it with swirling feedback to launch into the erratic "Heroin." Which is not in any way a cover of the Lou Reed staple. Their shared and varied vocals are also better executed than in the past. And you thought they were just sitting around twiddling all this time.
