The Charms are a five-piece girl-fronted band. They play biker rock and are from the East Coast. "Charmed, I'm Sure" is their first full-length album on Red Car Records.
The Charms try to sound as tough as Joan Jett, but they would have a hard time fighting the Halo Friendlies, even with three male members. The vocalist has enough attitude to sing for Squad Five-O, but the Charms' music is too wussy. That's because they stole the Monkees' organ and play it relentlessly on practically every song.
The one strong suit of the Charms is their lead guitarist who has plenty of licks up his sleeve. As far as originality with music or lyrics they have little else to offer. As a bar rock band they're about as exciting as an empty bar. Lyrically the songs are typical rants about relationships and having a good time. However, one of the best lines is "Who needs diamond rings / When there's permanent ink?"
What's disappointing about "Charmed, I'm Sure" is the lack of memorable songs. Of the 11 tracks only a couple like "Roses are Red" and "Marianne" are even memorable. Add that to the fact that bar rock is nothing new under the sun, there is a need to break new artistic ground, which the album fails to do.
