Sixpence, P.O.D., and now The Juliana Theory? Maybe not yet, but the Pennsylvania band is working on a full-length album for Epic, which is due out in summer 2002 and is supposed to be their big mainstream splash.
To tide fans over until then, the Juliana boys have released a six-song EP, Music From Another Room, that features cuts that span their career. Some, such as "Piano Song," were written several years ago, while others were recent creations.
The lyrics vary from song to song. Some are straightforward: "I've seen your worries, and I can understand everything you're going through /Don't give up tonight" ("Piano Song"), and some are more vague: "Carry me through the wires / Bury me in the screen / Shift me into this fixation /Cling to the machine." ("Breathing By Wires").
Musically, The Juliana Theory moves farther away from the emo sounds found on their first two releases and mixes in more diversity. "Moments..." finds Detar crooning over an atmospheric acoustic guitar, with light drum accompaniment in the background. That track and the next one, "In a Fraction," are one song, just divided into two different tracks, much like "You Always Say Goodnight, Goodnight" and "Emotion Is Dead Pt. II," from their 2000 release Emotion Is Dead. Opener "This Is the End of Your Life" is a straightforward rocker with some impressive guitar work.
Music From Another Room is a collection of various songs that didn't make it on other albums, and is therefore not very cohesive. Taken song by song, though, this is an excellent introduction to The Juliana Theory. Best Buy carries the album, among other retail mega-stores, so a lot of people should take notice of this up-and-coming band.
