My biggest complaint about Christian music in general is that it usually mimics the trends of the secular world, and is often a bit behind the times. In other words, popular Christian music bands are frequently guilty of copying non-Christian bands. There is not nearly as much originality in the world of modern Christian music as there is outside the CCM box. Many critics, however, are lauding Toby Mac (founder of Christian rock supergroup dc Talk) as one artist who can create music outside of the box. Is his debut solo project, Momentum, as unique as it's cracked up to be?
Regrettably, no. While Toby does offer a few moments of hip-hop brilliance, his album treads very little new ground. The way he melds elements of rock, rap and gospel music together is, at times, impressive, but, as a friend of mine said to me, "He sounds like Kid Rock."
"Get This Party Started" is a lively party tune that definitely kicks the album off on an energetic note, though the song is similar to other Christian rap/gospel songs, both musically and lyrically. "What's Goin' Down" is an album highlight, as Toby Mac blends fun hip-hop sounds with lyrics reminiscent of vintage dc Talk. In fact, many of Momentum's lyrics are similar to Free at Last-era dc Talk. The songs address racism, evangelism, and the ever-watchfulness of God, among other things.
Some of you may be wondering about the Kid Rock thing. Well, there is certainly some truth to that statement. Several songs on the record, including "Yours" and the hit "Extreme Days," among others, bear a striking resemblance to the rap/rock of Kid Rock and performers of his ilk. To make matters worse, all of these songs sound far too much like each other, adding a slight feeling of sameness and repetition to Momentum.
Well, now that I've thoroughly butchered most of the album, allow me to point out some of the pros of Momentum. Toby Mac shares the spotlight with a couple of notable guest performers, including Kirk Franklin and 16-year-old Joanna Valencia, who lends her formidable vocal skills to just about half of the album. Also, amusing interludes are sprinkled throughout the CD, which keeps things interesting, though they do get tiresome after repeated listens.
While Toby Mac offers very little that will impress those who like thoughtful, inventive music, Momentum is definitely a fun album that the casual listener will no doubt enjoy during many a long car trip or party. Is Momentum a classic in the making, or a landmark record that will last for years to come? Not at all. But it is a fun collection of hooky rap/rock songs that should appeal to fans of dc Talk or Christian hip-hop/rock.
