This is the first compilation CD put out by Sub City(a division of Hopeless Records). But this is not your average compilation CD, what it is, is a benefit CD actually. Proceeds from this CD go to the Foundation Fighting Blindness. This foundation funds research to study retinal degenerative diseases. More information on these diseases and the foundation itself appear on the inside cover the CD booklet. Often its generally hard to give a compilation CD an overall review. The subtitle of the CD says "A Punk Rock Sampler", and I guess that kind of describes the music on the CD, but not really. Sure there are punk bands on here, but there are also indie rock, emo, and ska-core sounding bands. So even though it's a punk rock sampler, all the bands do not sound the same.
Bands that appear on this CD are Fifteen, Scared of Chaka, FYP, The Weakerthans, Dillinger Four, Against All Authority, Falling Sickness, Algebra One, Funeral Oration, Kid Dynamite, Heckle, Damnation, and the Rabies. 8 of the 15 tracks are unreleased. Favorite tracks of mine that appear on this CD are the rock and roll sounding punk tune by FYP called "Come Home Smelly". I also really liked the Weakerthans song, "Everything Must Go" which is more of a laid back indie rock/emo sounding song. Falling Sickness does an acoustic version of their song, "Sleep It Off", which I was pretty impressed with. One band that I wasn't too familiar with but I liked a lot was, Algebra One, their song is called "Fireball". Funeral Oration contributed a cool song called, "Feel" which I believe is previously unreleased. While the Rabies finish off the CD with a classic sounding punk rock tune called "Staring At Your".
Overall I really enjoyed this compilation. I usually don't buy too many compilations, but I would recommend this one as a good buy. I think the CD only costs 4 or 5 bucks, and like I mentioned earlier proceeds go to a great cause. If you get the chance, pick up a copy of this CD, support the bands, the label and the cause. This is also a good opportunity to check out many of the bands Hopeless Records, and Sub City Records works with.
