The ten songs of the new Whitecross album, Flytrap, seemed like a short listen to me. The first song on the album, "Get Real," is by far the heaviest song on the album. The guitar and bass both lock in with the drums for a heavy groove that really is hard to resist. All of that with Scott Wenzel's trademark screaming makes this a great opener for the album!
The second song, "Amazing Love," starts off with the same energy level, but quickly loses that energy in the choruses. It does have a good message, though-God's love is truly amazing; and best of all, it's free!
"End of the Line" has a smooth, southern feel to it. It talks of the eternal presence of God, all through life, especially on the bad days:
Can't say what tomorrow brings But still I know you're mine At the end of the line
"Say a Prayer" is an uplifting song. It has a "happy" sound with major chords and a simple structure which makes it easy to sing along. It almost reminds me of Jars of Clay gone "heavy."
The first time I heard the opening of "Already Done," I had to do a double-take due to the song's similarity to "Disarm" by the Smashing Pumpkins. The chord pattern is the same, only faster. The entire middle section is intruded on by pop, Jars of Clay-like drums. These I could have done without. This probably would have been my favorite song less the drums.
"When He Comes" has very dramatic lyrical verses. The story is about our glorious future with Jesus, but this intensity is watered down by the very non-dramatic music.
Fans of Whitecross' earlier (and heavier) work may be disappointed by this effort (I was). However, it is a quality album if you are into smooth, produced, commercial rock music. Fans of producer David Zaffiro's solo work may also find this album appealing.
