If Pennywise and Sublime were able to do a split album it would sound a lot like Authority Zero. There really isn't another way to describe their sound. Authority Zero comes from Arizona which is east of the home state of Sublime and Pennywise. Authority Zero's logo is an A with a 0 around it which would be an Anarchy symbol and their band name...how clever. I really used to be into Pennywise when I was 16 or so and I was probably into Sublime somewhere along the line but I don't think I ever mixed the two.
A Passage in Time (Lava records...yes Kid Rock's record label) starts off with four "power" punk songs but then the fifth song totally sounds 100% like a Sublime ska/reggae song. I just didn't get it. Then for the rest of the album, they pretty much jump around with different music. One song is ska, then it goes to pop punk, then back to the power punk thing they started off with and then all around the world one more time. I got so annoyed with all the confusion that it took me about five sittings to get through the whole album.
The recording is average. Nothing all that great which surprised me because Lava is a pretty big record label. It was far from a bad recording but it was far from being anything amazing. I really didn't like the mix of all the genres and styles. It's kind of like mixing chocolate syrup and ice tea...it just doesn't work for me or for most people but I'm sure there are people who would love it...same thing with this band. I did like a few of the songs, mainly the first few but after that I lost interest. There are two music videos on this album so that is a plus for the band and it just makes it a better album but overall it was a subpar album.
