When an athlete retires from his or her sport, most fans expect their return to reveal a lost step or two. After six years away from music, Deliverance still appears to be running in stride. Assimilation sounds like the record that would chronologically fit between Learn and River Disturbance. The heavy low end, the doomy Bowie vocals, and the monstrous riffage are very impressive.
Utilizing Beatlesque distorted vocal talk-over bridge sections, the song writing seems to still show the imprint of former producer/mentor Terry Taylor. They throw in a dash of techno blips and beats to keep it fresh and interesting, too. The first few listens show the track listing as stocking the most likable and hook-ridden material at the front and end, but repeated listens reveal a more consistent listen from song to song.
How these guys could come back after six years and release one of their best albums is beyond me.
