Wilmore, KY's Eustace pour through a rocky form of emo that at times can seem almost like a stripped-down, underground Creed, sans the Eddie Stapp braying, and at other times like a more aggressive, raw Toad the Wet Sprocket. Needless to say, they display a wide variety of influences and musical ideas on their new 10-song full-length, The Intinction Method, on Vindicated From Deep Water Records. This can be distracting, like when they throw in a sloppy math rock bridge out of nowhere in "Squealer," or when they break into a radio rock crescendo in "Not 1/2 Bad" that feels tinny. At other times, however, their risk-taking pays off, as in "World Seems Waste," with its effective power transitions, "My Precious," a short acoustic lullaby of sorts, and "Cassie Said," which, despite following Michael W. Smith's media blitz tribute to the now-mythological Columbine student, pays her lo-fi homage with style.
