This is the 5th release from the new side label for Hopeless Records called Sub City. Sub City is a label whose main goal is to help punk rock make a positive difference in the world around us through helping out various organizations. What they do is donate a certain amount of money from each CD sale to various organizations that are picked by both the label and the bands. For this release a portion of the proceeds will go towards Schools for Chiapas. Chiapas is an area in Mexico where the poorest of the Mexican population resides. The land in this area is very rich in agricultural resources as well as oil. This area has recently been a target for many capitalist Americans. Basically these people are being taken advantage of, and both the U.S. and Mexican government have not done anything to put an end to this abuse. The Schools for Chiapas's goal is to provide aid to this area, as well as providing them free education so that the people of Chiapas can eventually become a more socially and politically minded population. There is an insert in the CD that goes into much greater detail, but I figured I would just give that overview since it is so much a part of this CD. In terms of the music, it is not exactly the type of stuff I usually listen to, but I will do my best to give it an honest review. This is basically a straight up punk rock album. Both bands sound similar although it is not too hard to tell them apart. Falling Sickness kind of has a hard hitting skate punk sound with a very slight ska influence at times. They only contribute 4 songs on this split EP, and one of the songs "Accion Directa" is sung totally in Spanish. I really liked the song "Assembly Line", it had a cool message about the state of many assembly line workers, and how they are often taken advantage of. The following line is from the song, "Pieces you construct you know nothing about. But the faster you build them the more parts they ship out. As the spur wheel keeps spinning, the spur wheel keeps spinning. The spur wheel will profit for no one but upstairs." Dysentery is a band that I'm not too familiar with, actually I have never heard of them. They kind of reminded me of Operation Ivy at times, if Op. Ivy was more straight up punk rock. Dysentery's lyrics are very politically oriented. Actually Falling Sickness has very politically motivated lyrics too. Like I said this was not really my thing, I guess it was a little too punk for me. Don't get me wrong I like punk rock, but the stuff I like has more of a pop feel and more melodies. But that's not what these bands are all about, so its all good. If you like quick drumming, in your face quickly played power chords, and a punk style bass line then you will love this. For this style of punk rock the production is really great too. Plus just by purchasing this CD you're helping out others in need, not a money hungry record label that could care less about its bands and helping others out.
