GROMS from Norway have become a first-class Christian metal band. I thought I would hear more demos from the band after reviewing their last demo in the Fall. I was wrong. Now they are back with a full-length CD packed with earth-shaking, brutal and awesome death metal.
GROMS, which is an acronym for "God Rules Over My Soul," have done things right since Turn. The band is now reduced to four members. The vocalist left the band a while ago and Oyvind, one of the guitarists, have taken his place. That's what makes GROMS a totally different band. The combination of the band's new musical style and the steady and powerful grinding from Oyvind's throat has resulted in a great album. The songs and the lyrics, the playing, the dark and convincing grinding, and the sonics are top notch in every sense -- except the final cut, which was recorded last Spring. The other nine songs were recorded in October and show a band that has progressed noticably during a few short months.
This is the first Christian death metal album from Norway. It's surprisingly good. In fact, it's one of the best death metal CD's -- Christian or secular -- I have tortured my ears with lately.
