Where do I begin? How about by saying only a few bands can craft an album this consistently enjoyable, which makes it even more incredible that this is their second album; Hangnail has laugh in the face of the "sophomore slump" concept, and then proceed to kick its feet out from under it and push it down a flight of stairs. Facing Changes is a fabulous punk-influenced pop/rock record that is genuine, mature, and original. The music reminds me a LOT of the new Element101 record, with more traditional song structure and attitude. The vocals are what really make this album stand out -- very strong and right on melodies and harmonies, without losing the energy or feeling (a common problem with T&N and BEC records in this genre).
Instrumentally the whole record is quite good as well, though, never dull, repetitive, or contrived; all the little things they do flow together nicely to create solid songs. Finally, the lyrics are a cut above what a lot of bands are doing these days: well written, meaningful songs that are not afraid to be open about God, be it their faith or their struggles. I desperately hope the secular market gets wind of this album, as it is a shining example of modern rock for many to follow.
