The image of typewriter keys overlaid onto a photo of the band on the back CD cover is a clue that this is a literate band. Other multicolored pictures of water and sea creatures also point to an impressionistic artistic perspective; one that allows the creative spirit to run wild. But it's unfair to judge a CD by its cover, since the world is filled with crummy music all done up in ribbons and bows, and conversely, many auditory classics are wrapped in the equivalent of a brown paper bag. Jacobstone is led by the singing of AJ Fink, who sings with a Bono-like yearning in his voice, yet his words are sometimes difficult to penetrate -- in a Radiohead sort of way. Jacobstone's sound is gentle and comforting one minute, then ringing with the chaotic echo of chimed guitars the next. And with interpretive but deadly serious lyrics, no doubt this is challenging music, which does not make for easy youth group life application. You may want to look at Jacobstone the same way you approach a David Lynch film. Like Lynch, this band is light on plot and direct linear direction, yet deeply saturated in symbolism and feel. So dive into Chambers And Volumes, and just let it engulf you.
