The caucasian P. Diddy -- that's T. Mac, of dcTalk fame and Gotee fortune -- drops 18 tracks of studio-enhanced, Kirk Franklin-fortified, golden-olden-morph-melody-injected uber urban pop on Momentum. There are shadows of early dcTalk on this thing, but, believe it or not, mostly the high noon type. You will find some of that kind of cheese on tracks 1 and 8. The other fare is either straight from or for MTV. Like P. Diddy, T. Mac mines proven hooks from the distant and recent past and "supes them up," as they say, for songs like "What's Going Down," "Irene," and "Somebody's Watching." He also mines some platinum styles: Destiny's Child on "Do You Know," Limp Bizkit on "Yours," and Jay-Z, et al, on "Wonderin' Why." This is not necessarily to insinuate that T. is a rip-off artist. His creativity (and suitcase-size advance) shines bright in the tracks and arrangements, and his unique talent is pervasive in numbers like "Love is in the House" and "In the Air." Besides, you weren't expecting Pharcyde, Wu Tang, or Roots were you? T. rolls large on dynamics and "the catch," whether he creates it or borrows it. Either way, the real 'bottom line' is that Momentum sounds really, really, really expensive, so perhaps it is a guilty pleasure by proxy alone? But let's not soil our character with ugly things like classism. Shame on me! Now where MY freaks at?

ReAL Magazine 2001Reviewed by Josh L!When Toby McKeehan (Mac) says "Comin' at ya like a whirlwind," it isn't just hype. Momentum is intense. It moves quickly, evolves quickly, and is likely to keep almost any listener engaged. Momentum is McKeehan's much-anticipated solo effort, and the third such effort from a dc Talk member. McKeehan's music would most likely be categorized as hip-hop, but shouldn't be restricted to that box.…ReAL Magazine 2001Reviewed by Kevin D. HendricksThe final solo venture from one-third of dc Talk, and by far the best. Aggressive and eclectic, it spans the confines of urban hip-hop with some well polished hits that stick in your head. If you buy one CD this year, this is it.The Rebel Base 2001Reviewed by Josh HurstMy biggest complaint about Christian music in general is that it usually mimics the trends of the secular world, and is often a bit behind the times. In other words, popular Christian music bands are frequently guilty of copying non-Christian bands. There is not nearly as much originality in the world of modern Christian music as there is outside the CCM box. Many critics, however, are lauding…The Rebel Base 2001Reviewed by David MartinHere we are, at the end of a strange trilogy of solo albums by the members of the Christian Hit Radio juggernaut known as dc Talk. Allow me to recap for those of you just tuning in: Michael Tait formed a band and put out a hot CD of straight-up rock and roll last July. Kevin Max, resident poet of the group, followed with an interesting blend of pop, rock, and world music that got the attention of…The Phantom Tollbooth 2001Reviewed by Josh McConnellIf only one word could sum up my favorite album that was released in 2001, it would be "Momentum." The third solo release from dc Talk's three members is finally here, and with a big bang! TobyMac's debut album was my most anticipated album out of the three, but the big question is, does it live up to the hype? In one short, but sweet word, yes! Sure we had to wait an extra month for it, but it…
