Down to the roots of just plain music that feeds from the feelings of the soul. Strip away all the power of the studio and special effects and sit down on the porch and hit record on your old recorder. And who could do it better than those rock 'n' roll veterans Darrell Mansfield and Glenn Kaiser? Put on the old steel strings and the sweet harmonica whistle and get ready for a love that still remains within the blues--the roots of today's rock 'n' roll. With blues comes what's on the heart, and what greater joy than of telling someone, "Hey! Jesus is right here for you," on the opening track, Jesus On The Mainline. To hear Darrell's voice on the track Slidin', when he sings the lyric "The place you need to anchor is right on your bended knees." He says it with such power as they both perform throughout the entire Burn. And speaking of burnin', the title seems odd until you understand the outlook on how the love that is wished is one that will just slowly keep burning: "Got eternity to love you.../Don't need no reputation/Earthly glory'll leave you cold/Live an' learn/It's like kissin' through a windowpane/Pretendin' it's true love/Live an' learn/A love that'll last eternally/That's what I want: a slow burn." This project is a raw, raw, raw recording to just give the stripped down blues. With this production it gives and keeps giving the truth with feeling. If you wish to just experience the beginnings of rock 'n' roll and be blessed by the vocal, lyrical and musical rawness of Mansfield and Kaiser, then this one's definitely for you or for someone you wish to share the blues.
Other coverage for this album
The Lighthouse April 1993Reviewed by Beth BlinnSlow Burn, released on Grrr Records, is the follow-up to Trimmed and Burning, the first Kaiser/Mansfield collaboration. While both recordings are acoustic blues, the similarity pretty much ends there. The first album was mostly Kaiser and Mansfield covering tunes from early blues players that they admired. This time around, Kaiser has written two-thirds of the album, and I found that I enjoyed it…Similar sounding releases
