For those of you familiar with Living Sacrifice, you know as well as I do that with each progressing album, the sound has changed in small distinct ways, yet this makes each album set apart and different from one another. The vocals of Darren Johnson have gone from yelling, to an indecipherable growl, then finally to death. The guitars are also tuned way down and distorted as compared to the others.
When I first got this CD two years ago, I hated it, and never listened to it. Every song seemed to be the same, and it bored me. However, after listening to it more and more, it has grown on me and become my favorite L.S. album by far. This CD has more double bass kicks than just about any other album I have ever heard, and Lance Garvin does it just as good or better than anyone. Upon careful inspection, there are many acoustic interludes in these songs that add a whole new dimension to death metal, and I really enjoy that.
Notable tracks on this disc are "Inhabit", "Mind Distant", and "Departure". All of these are brutal songs with great speed and drumming. The best thing about this CD definitely occurs at the very end. The song "Departure" is actually a two-part song that is ten minutes long. Departure is the first three minutes, and "Dead Silence" is the other seven. In my opinion, Dead Silence is the best instrumental of all time, and it is dedicated to all the people who have lost someone to suicide. This really rounds out a great CD.
