Free is a seven song album. Normally, you would think of a seven song album as an EP, but this lasts over forty minutes! "Father Father" opens the CD, contrasting the differences between God and biological fathers. Done in a 70's style, it features a repeated chorus, and long guitar bridges between verses.
"Free", the title track, opens with a Chagall Guevara guitar riff, then highlights lead singer Crispin Schroeder's best Mike Peters (The Alarm) imitation. "Surrender," "Perfect Love," and "The Good News Is" all point the listener to God, while musically contributing elements from Queensryche, Pink Floyd, old White Heart, The Wallflowers, and Mitch McVicker.
It's hard to put a label on Mary's Den, other than to say that this is good stuff - driving rock that shows the players having spent some time in their parents' record collections, but mixing that with a thoroughly modern sound that produces some great results.
