I have always enjoyed the sound of country music, and have listened to a variety of artists. My favorites have always seemed to be female vocalists, with the occasional Johnny Cash thrown in-until now. MidSouth has captured my CD player with a sound I love, and my heart with a message I never tire of hearing. What is it that has caught me up so quickly, with a group that has been around for more than 10 years? (Where have I been all that time?) This trio has a great sound with lyrics that speak of relationships, love, and the promise that through all kinds of weather, we'll make it somehow. MidSouth speaks to us of everyday life-lived with the promise that in Christ there is an eternity to follow, filled with love, joy, and peace in His presence.
MidSouth has produced a diversified country music sound with this self-titled release. "Definition Of Love" starts off the project with a fast-paced, foot-stomping, kick-up-your-heels sound that should make an awesome music video (as planned for release). "She Knows" has the steady beat of a long term relationship and is as upbeat as the true love of a couple who continually expresses that love. "Puttin' The Ax (To The Root Of My Trouble)" brings out the sound of country rock and speaks of new starts by getting rid of our old troubles.
"Fall Reaching" is a ballad of a father's advice to his son on how to live his life, whether it's playing baseball or falling in love for the first time:
Eight years old with my Louisville slugger Daddy said, "Keep your eye on the ball There'll be times that you lose the big game But keep your chin up whenever you fall" If you're gonna win, win graceful If you're gonna love, love faithful If you're gonna learn, learn by teaching If you're gonna fall, fall reaching.
"Back In My Hometown" will be a certain hit to many who (like myself) grew up in a small town or a close-knit neighborhood. With a blending of vocal harmonies, MidSouth reminds us of the ties each of us has to our own hometowns. The memories of childhood and the bonds we make with our neighbors and friends draw parallels to the kinship I feel to my brothers and sisters in Christ. As I listened to the storyline of "Back In My Hometown," I was reminded of the parable of the lost son. I can't wait to be united with my Father back in my hometown-what a book-kicking, soul-lifting hoe down that will be!
