One Week of Days is an Irish husband/wife duo, Bob and Jan Murphy. Bob plays all the instruments, and both contribute vocals. This album was recorded in order to tour with backing tracks, and as such, there is a mix of material on here. Some works well, some, not having been previously tested, doesn't seem to work as well.
Most of the songs are pretty low-key, at slower tempos, making this album sound somewhere between a praise album and a rock album. At first, the album sounded all of a piece, with the exception of the track "El Shaddai," where Jan Murphy's lovely mezzo-soprano really soars, bringing the song to new heights. However, this album comes more and more alive with each successive listening. Some tracks, like "Am I Preachin'?" still don't quite work. But for a debut album recorded entirely in a home studio, the production and musicianship are both solid. The packaging of the disc is tastefully and attractively done. This is a group that has pride in what they do.
Doing a comparison is somewhat tricky, since everyone will draw their own comparisons. What I can say is that they do not sound quite like anyone else currently in the Christian market. They land in a space quite comfortably not praise and worship, not rock, not quite pop, not really contemporary, yet a blend of all of these which is their own. That is not bad. There is definitely a good deal of potential for this duo. I can only hope there is sufficient success that they will continue.
