If a mountain lion was the lead singer in a hardcore punk band, you would get something similar to Planes Mistaken for Stars. The vocals are really abrasive so unless you're into this type of music, you'll hate it and thank the heavens that this is only an EP. Of course I didn't understand a word that was said but this guy has a decent screaming voice. The vocals weren't just a monotone barking, but it actually had some sort of melody, not much, but it still had a little - okay an eensy teensy tiny bit. Well, maybe screaming in different pitches once in a while. As far as the music, it's pretty good and fairly creative. What this album has though - is a lot of energy. The musicianship is really tight and pretty complex. Not once did I think to myself, "I really need to take this out of the stereo." That right there is reason enough for it not to get a 'C' in my book. It makes good background music if you're in the right mood (like if you're chopping wood or reading a Conan book). I don't think I would ever listen to it as foreground music though. If you don't like abrasive hardcore punk then you'll probably think my grade is way too high. I don't like the genre either, but these guys can do it well. So I guess my B- (which still stands for "good album") means something.
