Simple Kid is the moniker used by Kieran McFeely to front his unique blend of cut-up acoustic guitar, electric beats and insightful lyrics. Because of his use of witty, intelligent lyrics and the use of guitar and harmonica, Simple Kid has been referred to as a post-modern Bob Dylan. Although you can hear the influence in areas, he is not an updated Dylan clone. His upbeat quirky sound belies the deeper meaning beneath.
McFeely recorded his songs with guitar on a home eight-track, then chopped them up and added electronic drums and noises on his laptop. The result is an album that sounds wonderful, yet not overproduced.
The first single "Staring At The Sun" tells the story of trying to make it through life without selling your soul. "The Average Man" is a song full of statistics that tells the life of an average man. McFeely is able to pull this off well, giving us a powerful critique of society.
With "Love's An Enigma" he almost completely dispenses with the lyrics, he has nothing more to say than love's an enigma, being that it is, what more can you say.
There is not a throw away track on this album. Simple Kid has created a wonderful thing with his one-man band--music that is not awash with bad poetry, or lyrics that do not sound penned by a 15 year old boy in love or angry at his parents. It is one of the best of the year.
