The Icarus Line is a mere 2 years old, but they have already racked up half a dozen tours. They are from Los Angeles, CA and have released a few 7"s with Hellcat and Buddyhead records. This is the band's first release on Initial Records.
At first listen, the major impression is madness. It's as if a new government program is supplying instruments to mental patients. A music teacher's nightmare, The Icarus Line breaks all the rules. But out of the chaos comes something special and unique. Musically, there's singing, there's screaming, morbid bass lines, and loose guitar work all over the place. To try and describe their sound a mite better, I guess it's in the direction of a Black Flag/Braid combo. The music is choppy with quick tempo changes, tight cuts, and angry distorted vocals, which reign above it all. The CD includes a video of the band playing "Feed a Cat to your Cobra" live and the album layout is pretty sweet with some nice artwork. The production is solid, offering a recording that is fresh and crisp. For those who enjoy listening to music that pushes the limits and makes new rules this is something you should check out. As for me, although I initially thought it weird, I must admit that each time I listen, it grows on me.
