Generally, music videos (and accompanying live recordings) only appeal to die-hard fans of a group. They are usually a poor introduction to a band for someone unfamiliar with the group. However, with Unplugged, The Kry have created one of those rare projects that should extend far past their current fan-base; it is an excellent introduction to the group for anyone who has never heard them.
Unplugged is not one of those aggressive 20-wailing-musician-type projects that leave you wondering why they unplugged the amps in the first place. Here, they offer new arrangements of their music, playing only with an acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, drum kit, piano & organ (played by their producer, John Andrew Schreiner), and several back-up vocalists-and a harmonica in one spot. They produce a fresh, easily accessible emotive sound. It should be welcomed not only by fans of their usual pop/rock sound, but fans of CHR, rock, and folk/rock fans as well.
They don't waste a lot of effort with flashy lights or high-tech special effects. They use an eye-catching set, but things are surprisingly simple. They take the axiom of "less is more" almost to the extreme-and I am highly impressed with the results. However, simple doesn't mean apathetic. I felt a strong sense of them playing their hearts out.
Included are several of their popular hits, a few worship-oriented songs, and a couple new songs. It should be a great project for the Kry fans, and a wonderful chance for you to "meet the band" (even though there are only a few short interview clips) if you aren't yet a fan.
