With their debut The Kry was written off as a band that wanted to sound like a cross between Halo and Bryan Adams. My, how times have changed. Tracks like "I Can't Stop Thinking About You" and "Everywhere" flirt with jangly, post-Byrd-isms, while tracks like "I Know Everything About You" mix funk and arena rock almost as capably as Extreme.
And, yes, their lead singer does sound a bit like Bryan Adams, but that isn't a problem most of the time, even when things slow down for the dramatic epic "Jesus Is Coming Soon," with its Dream Theater-buildup, or the solid acoustic guitar track "Take My Hand" (altough it may be a bit too Guardian or Extreme).
The weakness of the album rests in those unimaginative moments most primed for airplay, such as "Heavenbound Train" and the Bryan Adams-like piano ballad "He Won't Let You Go." On the other hand, "I Believe In You" should bother me as a Michael W. Smith knockoff, but the children's choir was just the sort of touch that's shameless but works—and, just as I consider John Hughes' movies to be shameless, too, I still often find myself tearing up in spite of myself.
