There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the release of the Lost Prophets' sophomore album, Start Something. This buzz is what naturally occurs when a band starts getting some mainstream success (i.e. radio airtime), and usually results in the music elite turning their backs on the artist, and the teenyboppers warmly embracing their creation. Start Something is no exception to the rule, and thus, already thousands of kids nationwide have added this album alongside their Good Charlotte and Linkin Park discs, while the indie scene has ignored it completely.
And rightly so. Here's the problem: Lost Prophets began writing this album during the popularity of the almost-dead nu-metal trend. They took so long writing, recording, and perfecting this that upon its release, it doesn't really fit contextually with current music trends. Had this been released a year or two ago, people would be talking about these guys rather than Fred Durst and Scott Stapp. Generally an album with deep roots in artistry and creativity could still be well received under such circumstances, but because Start Something was created for commercial success and accessibility it has been lost behind the newest trends and the newest bands.
With that said, you will either completely love this album or detest it with every fiber of your being. If you are a fan of Hoobastank, Linkin Park, or even a more rock oriented Good Charlotte, then you will adore this album, because it was written to be accessible for people like you. If the above bands make you want to cause bodily harm to those around you, then I would recommend staying away from Start Something both for your sake and for the sake of those nearby.
