i've liked chumbawamba since jason underground taped me their first five albums in about 1994 or so. since then they've had their 15 minutes of fame (with an album that was really pretty lousy) and moved back into relative obscurity. they've also developed a bit of an adult-contemporary feel--but still very eclectic and interesting, both musically and lyrically. they still employ a lot of dance music elements, but have definitely mellowed out some since "shhh" or "anarchy". while this isn't as brilliant or creative as the post-"tubthumper" album, "wysiwyg", it's much better than "readymades" (which, after recent listenings, isn't as bad as i originally thought). lyrically they deal with the bleaching out of iraqi culture, the decapitation of a statue of margret thatcher, the bully culture that leads to school chootings, pie-throwing revolutionaries, and other creative subversiveness. i think i might be one of the only pre-pop star chumbawamba fans that still likes them and thinks they're doing something good.
