Stay of Execution represents a departure for Deliverance, both as a band and their musical style. Veering away a bit from the speed metal and thrash sound from their first three albums, this CD slowed down a bit and introduced elements of art metal akin to Saviour Machine's 1990 demo, with lyrical content being more introspective than before. It took me a bit to get into this CD (about six months, to be exact), but it's one of the CDs in my collection that gets played at least once a week now.

The album opener, "Stay Of Execution", is a poignant reflection on our struggles in flesh parallel to the Apostle Paul's lament in Romans 7:18-25. "Words To The..." is the best representation of the lyrical depth and craft Jimmy Brown was developing. The real oddity here is the cover of Daniel Amos' "Horrendous Disc", a mini opera that's almost gothic in its execution (no pun intended). Rounding off the CD is a bare bones remix of their classic "Weapons Of Our Warfare". Stay of Execution, though not a classic, exudes charm.

Not a speed metal wimp out!" Well, it only takes a few seconds into the lead-off track to know that this isn't the case. The mammoth Mesa-Boogie crunch that Jimmy P. Brown II is known for is ever present, along with the confident head-ripping intensity that Deliverance fans love. What Terry Taylor…
