David Bazan is a genius. When I first heard this CD I didn't quite pick up on the concept of the story, but after hearing the story explained I was just blown away. Most of you have probably heard something about the story at this point, but if not Jim Shady in his review does a good job at giving you the general idea. But he didn't mention it all, so see if you can figure out some of the twist and turns. This time around Bazan changed things up a bit. Some of the songs are his standard mellow indie rock tunes (Eye on the Finish Line, and Winners Never Quit), a few others actually kind of rock out (Simple Economics, Never Leave a Job Undone and A Mind of Her Own), and two are very folky sounding acoustic tunes (Slow and Steady Wins the Race, and Bad Things To Such Good People). I definitely like the diversity this album brings, especially for Pedro the Lion. Instead of each song telling a different story, with this album each song comes together to tell one large story. So unlike Pedro the Lion's other albums, this is an album that is met to be listened to in its entirety. Not that you won't enjoy the songs individually, as the band has proven while on tour. The only downside of this CD is that it was a little bit too short. With only 8 songs clocking in at about 30 minutes it just makes for a short album, yet my guess would be that this was done intentionally since it is best listened to in its entirety. If you are a fan of Pedro the Lion's other material, then there is no reason you should not go out and get this CD.
